TODAY, THEO MET GAVIN at a newer restaurant near Gavin’s office. Gavin greeted him when he walked in.

“Sorry I’m running a little behind,” Theo said as he and Gavin followed the hostess to their table.

“No problem, Boss.” Gavin grinned at the look Theo gave him.

“What’s Paul’s number? Your boss needs to call and tell him you’re available for the wedding.”

Gavin snorted. “Mom’s called me more this month about that than the entire time I’ve lived here.”

Theo heard the pain beneath the lighthearted words and hated he had mentioned the sore subject. Gavin had been ignored by his older parents and siblings for years. They acted as if they had no idea what to do with him and made no secret that Gavin had been an oops baby by his elderly parents.

“I sent her a check to help, but I’m not going.”

Theo nodded.

“When is Imani coming home?” Gavin asked.

“Tonight. Tomorrow I’m working from the house.”

“Sure you are,” Gavin said.

“In-laws are with her for the funeral and coming tomorrow.” He looked at Gavin. “Like I said, I’ll be working from the house. Ada has ideas for the nursery and Ramon likes to pull my chain. Imani thinks he’ll fall in love with the gardens and want to hang out there. She’s happy they’re visiting but isn’t sure what to do with them.”

“Chances are they just want to chill with you guys, hang out. This is their first and only grandchild.”

Theo agreed. “My first too.”

“Happy for you man.” Gavin extended his fist.

Theo bumped it. “Scares me and makes me happy at the same time.”

Gavin nodded.

“When I asked Imani to stop taking birth control, I didn’t think we’d be pregnant six weeks later. Just hope we’re mentally prepared,” Theo said.

“With her parents, Aunt Celeste and Marcus, there’ll be a lot of love and help. When little man or baby girl is older, I’ll spend more time with them. Take my niece or nephew shopping or out for ice-cream or to a game. Think they’ll like soccer?”

Theo stared at Gavin’s serious face and laughed. “Man you’re way in the future with that but yeah, any kid of mine will like soccer.” He couldn’t stop chuckling at Gavin’s embarrassed grin.

“If I ever go overboard, let me know... like you just did. I’m really excited about your kid. Kind of like you’re stepping out of one lane into another and I’m a spectator.”

“Or a researcher,” Theo said in a dry tone as the server placed their drinks on the table. “You just want to see how I handle being a dad and deal with everything before you take that plunge.”

Gavin dipped his head a few moments and then tugged on his tie as he met Theo’s gaze. “And?”

Theo laughed. “And nothing. Do you, that’s all. When you’re ready, do you.”

Gavin’s face relaxed. “You’ve always been so much more fearless than me. You don’t mind taking chances. I’m not built that way.”

“Which is why we get along so well. No matter what or how you move forward, I’ve got your back,” Theo said with feeling.
